Swedish Meteorological and Hydrological Insitute (SMHI)

The Oceanographic Unit of the Swedish Meteorological and Hydrological Institute (SMHI) is designated national data centre for oceanographic data. SMHI is Sweden’s largest producer of physical and chemical oceanographic data and also a major producer of marine biological data. SMHI runs SHARK (Swedish Ocean Archive), the national databank for physical and chemical oceanographic data, and is rapidly developing a national and regional phytoplankton database.

SMHI runs the national sea-level and caisson network, manages Sweden’s largest databanks of CTD-, underway surface-, current meter-and wavedata, and runs the national SST network. It is one of the key stakeholders in remote sensing data & information management, it runs the international BALTEX Oceanographic Data Centre, and is host to the EuroGOOS office. SMHI is rapidly expanding the presence on the web, offering data for downloading, products in near-real time and delayed mode.

SMHI uses its meteorological, hydrological and oceanographic expertise to promote efficiency, safety and a better environment in various areas of society.
